Detroit Focus has received a grant from the Michigan Council
for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, which included money from
the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the purpose
of funding the Robert Wilbert Project. The purpose of the
project is to create a publication about artist Robert Wilbert
and his impact on the artist community during his 38-year
teaching career at Wayne State University. It will illustrate
and indicate his philosophy, methodology and deep connection
to Michigan and its cultural institutions.

Despite challenging economic times we have raised $18,000
and are hoping to raise a total of $32,000 to produce 500
copies of a book (8-1/2 x 11 inches, 150 pages, with 50 color
photographs and five black and white photos). The working
title for the book is Robert Wilbert: Tradition in the
21st Century. Its importance lies in the fact the artist
and the professionals involved in the project are primary
sources of information.

Those committed to the
project are:

Dirk Bakker, former
Head of the Detroit Institute of Arts' Photography Department,
Florence Morris, the Donald Morris Gallery,
Marsha Miro, Founding Director of the Museum
of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)
Peter Williams, artist and former colleague
of Robert Wilbert at Wayne State University
Ellen Phelan, artist and recent recipient of
the Smithsonian Archives of American Art Medal,
Susanne Hilberry, the Susanne Hilberry Gallery,
and
Gere Baskin, Editor, Detroit Focus.

The book will lead to new understanding of an art practice
that requires visual rigors, discipline, and creates wider
possibilities for artists and teachers by its example.

We ask that you make as generous a contribution as possible
