In November 2000, Detroit Focus, an artists' alliance, coordinated the largest visual arts event in the city's history. Detroit Focus 2000 consisted of well over one hundred exhibitions and dozens of lectures and special events. It provided an opportunity for hundreds of artists and photographers to display their work throughout metropolitan Detroit and the surrounding communities of southeastern Michigan.

This portfolio includes some of the finest photographs shown in the festival. It was assembled in order to provide one more opportunity to showcase the work of thirty-nine astonishingly gifted photographers, and to provide a means to complete the financial obligations that Detroit Focus incurred during the festival. The small financial deficit was in fact a silver lining, because if it did not exist neither would this wonderful portfolio.

The individuals included are seasoned professionals at the top of their craft. They come to us, each with a unique archive of images. Their work represents years of assignments, projects and artistic exploration, as well as years of competition, struggle and commitment.

The existence of this portfolio also represents a special camaraderie among respected colleagues, and a profound act of generosity. Each individual in the portfolio was asked to contribute ten signed photographs of one of their most compelling images. What we asked for and received from these important artists is incredibly significant. We extend our sincere appreciation to each of them and are humbled by their kindness and generosity of spirit.

Three special guests also were asked to participate in the project. The fine poets Philip Levine and Jim Daniels often write about the people and places in their hometown. Hence it was quite fitting to invite them to participate in this unique Detroit project. A.D. Coleman, photography's most well-respected writer and critic, came to Detroit during the festival and shared his insights about the world of photography today and a suggested vision for its future. We are pleased and honored to have these special writers as part of this portfolio.

The Detroit Focus Portfolio collection is available for exhibition to all non-profit institutions. Please contact the Detroit Focus director for availability and exhibition requirements.

Special Portfolio Contributions:
The Perils of Pluralism.....by AD Coleman
Photo Opportunity.....by Jim Daniels
Listen Carefully.....by Philip Levine

We have been aware and sensitive to the fact that some very good photographers, and many fine individuals that were important to the success of Detroit Focus 2000, were not invited to be part of this project. Detroit is a photographers' city and it has an important and rich photographic heritage. We regret being unable to include many other fine photographers. Therefore, the individuals included in the portfolio not only represent themselves, but also the work of the nearly three hundred other photographers who were part of this festival of photography.

The Detroit Public Library premiered the Detroit Focus 2000 Portfolio in March 2001. This wonderful institution has a long history of providing exhibition opportunities for photographers and it was fitting that this body of work begin its journey there.

As this work leaves our hands, we hope that those who view this portfolio are aware of the deep commitment of these artists, are inspired by their imagery, and are moved by the giving nature of these fine individuals.
