Photography Program Head: William R. Soule [Email]

William (Bill) Soule heads the photography and video areas of the program at Macomb Community College. When asked by Detroit Focus what the strengths of the program are, he quickly replied: "The adjunct faculty." When asked what the weaknesses of the program are, he jokingly answered: "The adjunct faculty." It's that light-hearted tone that sets the stage for the photo education program at MCC.

"The real strengths of the program are twofold," Soule said seriously. "It's, one, the deep formal training and, two, broad professional experience in the field of the full and part-time faculty. That's what makes MCC’s programs in photography, video, and graphics first-rate. We also strive to acquire and maintain state-of-the-art equipment and supplies for both the traditional and the digital photography programs. We offer both black& white and color printing classes as well as well-equipped studios for photography and video production uses. An additional strength, one that goes hand in hand with photography, is that students at MCC can take classes in Photoshop, Illustrator, Web design, and even 3-D Animation. Furthermore, we make sure that the five large computer labs located at the South Campus have the most current versions of all the software that our students use. For all of these reasons, we think MCC is a great educational value for any photography student."

Approximately 250 students take photography classes on three main campuses with t
he program center at the South Campus location in Warren.
Here's what two former Macomb CC photography students have to say about their Macomb experience...

"It was a wise decision for me to attend Macomb Community College before transferring. I use my experiences from Macomb on every project I work on. Macomb not only gave me design skills, but the instructors do a wonderful job in preparing their students for careers in the real world."
Sharon Szalkowski, now studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

"The college is clean, the campus is an actual campus, not an office building and a parking lot. This has a great effect on the students as well. The library is fantastic. The photo department has digital cameras. The labs have scanners and printers that work! There are contests where you can win big prizes too, like a 2 year scholarship paid in full... that was unexpected but very, very nice!"
Sara Lynn Duquette, now studying at the Atlanta Institute of Art
