A storm approaches the Kounoungo Camp in Eastern Chad. As of
July 19, 2004, there were 10,918 displaced Sudanese out of an
approximated 2.3 million affected by the Khartoum Government-sponsored
war on Darfur. Women are traditionally responsible for fetching
water on behalf of their families, both inside of the camp and
outside. The water bladder from which the water is drawn holds
5,000 gallons and is turned on for several hours twice each
day once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The
camp has three wells from which the entire population will be
able to get water once the pipes have been fully placed. Work
is underway. The dry local conditions around the camps make
drilling for water a difficult and often unproductive enterprise.
