On their exodus from the Darfur region of Western Sudan, most
refugees tried to bring their livestock with them to help carry
their things. Many reported that the Janjaweed militias were
on horseback in pursuit, and many others reported traveling
only at night to avoid both the militia and the high-flying
Antinov bombers of the Sudanese government forces.
Few
animals seem to have survived the journey due to the attacks
and the parched landscape of the border region. The area is
now littered with dead and dying camels, cattle and donkeys
at the end of the long dry season. The rains that can provide
enough graze to sustain their livestock for another season don't
appear until July and August too late for this camel.
